The Truth About Spiritual Growth

Being naked doesn’t make you a mahavir (great hero). To become a mahavir, you may have to shed your attachments and ego, but that’s not the same as physical nakedness.

You visit sacred sites like the Ganges, thinking that a dip in its waters will liberate you. But the frogs living in the Ganges have been bathing in its waters their whole lives, yet they remain frogs. Who will attain liberation first?

Your approach to spirituality is like going on a picnic. You’re more interested in the thrill of the journey than the actual destination. You visit famous temples and shrines, but you’re still the same person, trapped in your own limitations.

You’re attracted to the external trappings of spirituality, like wearing a tilak or carrying a rosary. But true spirituality is about internal transformation, not external symbols.

Shiva’s teachings emphasize that regardless of the path you follow, whether it’s Vaishnavism, Vedism, Vamachara, or Dakshinachara, the ultimate goal is to attain self-realization. Without this understanding, all spiritual practices are mere rituals.

Even in meditation, the experiences you have, such as seeing serpents or feeling vibrations, are just reflections of your subconscious mind and the movement of energies. They’re not the same as true samadhi, where the observer itself disappears.

As Shiva says in the KulArnava Tantra:

“Those who live on grass, leaves, and water, and dwell in the forest, are they truly yogis? Or are the deer and other animals that live on grass and water also yogis? No, they are not. [KulArnava Tantra, Chapter 1, Verse 81]”

True spirituality is not about external practices or rituals; it’s about internal transformation and self-realization.
